Shay Cook and Caroline Upton met in 2004 when they worked together as search and rescue volunteers in California. They have obtained extensive expertise in the field of scent detection and developed search strategies applicable to many disciplines through their experiences working with search and rescue dogs.
In 2007 they recognized a need in the agricultural community for more effective insect infestation detection methods. Combining Shay's scientific background with Caroline's experience growing up and working in her father's vineyard, they created I.D. Dogs. The Vine Mealybug was chosen as the first target because it is so difficult to detect early on using traditional methods.
Their current focus is on working with growers and the Agricultural Commissioners Office to minimize the impact of the Vine Mealybug on vineyards by detecting the pests earlier and more precisely than previously possible. This will help reduce costs, both organic and non-organic, while combatting the spread of the Vine Mealybug.
